What’s inside – Taming the Techno-Beast Student Workbook

TamingWorkbookDisplayWe’ve come a long way since the days of Pong. In fact, our society has entered a world of virtual reality. We play video games that look so real, it’s hard to believe they aren’t. We have thousands of ‘friends’ that we don’t know. We share pictures and information about ourselves with total strangers. We devote hours of our time to pretend families, farms, and games. We beep, text, and post our way through most of our days, rarely stopping to assess whether it’s all for the best.

Is this age of hyper-technology beneficial or is it possible that some aspects of it are harmful? Have you ever taken a step back from it long enough to consider that question? Do you feel like your parents are on you about the amount of time you spend on your phone? On video games? On Facebook? Do you sometimes feel distracted by it, exhausted by it, or pulled by it? The truth is that the Bible has something to say about all this technology. This workbook will help you (and your parents) take a look at what God says about the various areas of technology. It will not, however, give you a list of do’s and don’ts.

Join us as we glance at the history of technology and how it has evolved. Learn why we (guys and gals) are so intrigued by technology and discuss what happens if we don’t learn to control our usage of it. We will evaluate our current consumption of technology and set some standards to help guide us. By the time we’re finished with this study, we will have learned how to control the ‘Techno-Beast’ instead of allowing it to control us.

What’s inside:

– A short history of technology

– The ugly side of technology

– The three stages of the techno-beast *Time waster *Time Consumer * Idol and Master

– The different technology attractions for boys and girls ( Warriors vs. Communicators)

– A plan to Kill the Beast!!

*Don’t minimize it *Take a look at the facts *Set some standards *Do what you have to do

– Collecting the data (write down your time usage)

– Setting standards (Appearance/actions/speech/time)

– Signs that the Techno-beast is reeling you in

  1. Hi, This comment is to share with you how we benefitted from your book and workbook in the past few months! We are homeschooling parents. Dad was perturbed by the sons being “on the computer” but had nothing more than a gut feeling and of course he surfs the web in the evening to relax, so what could he say? My use is mostly utilitarian — I refuse to play games, but maybe monthly indulge in entertainment by watching a movie or videos. The refrain of “I’m bored” simply doesn’t exist in either of our adult lives, so we were stumped. I obtained and eagerly read your book and workbook and then the workbook became a mini class for our two teen sons. They recognized the spiritual focus as valid (and wanted to convince us it’s ok to relax via media), therefore we made a Technology Log 2019 that acknowledges the myriad uses in our household. (I can send you a pdf version). The 6 categories are Education/Work/Business, Gadgets (cameras, GPS, RC etc.), Music/Audio(incl books), Entertainment(movies, videos, games), Social (phone, text, email, apps), Misc/Reference (weather, maps, recipes, photos, shopping). After a week of logging all time, both sons saw the need for a proactive in-control approach. They saw why they “never had time” for certain self-desired pursuits. It’s taken me at least a month since then to think and pray and then think and pray some more, before articulating our goal that our sons learn how to pattern daily life NOW — establishing habits for their adult life, and for them to model and teach to their families and others. So, I have resumed evening Read Aloud time after dinner, added class time for a family goal, established that entertainment has a limit (in terms of duration and time of day daily and/or weekly), and is only allowed after the valuable activities of the day are completed, added chores (household maintenance!), and exercise/outside time, and we’re looking for service opportunities (the previous venue closed down 2 years ago). Our sons were already careful about content and are to be praised for that! It was the Lord’s timing and instruction. Thank you for providing a respectful structured approach to the topic.

    1. Now that is what we like to hear. You TAMED the techno-Beast! Don’t let up your guard…it never dies!!!
