It’s Hard Working from Home

dad at homeHey Dad,

There’s a certain…um…romantic, righteousness about dads working from their home. I know my non-home-working counterparts think I live a life of ease. I remember one dad-friend accusing me of not working in the REAL world. The way he saw it, the real world was tough…scratching a living by the sweat of his brow as he enjoyed his power lunches, business trips, and un interrupted…power-stuff.

I’m telling you, working out of the home is ten times more difficult that working in some nice office building. Why I can barley write this off-the-cuff blog without being interrupted about a dozen times.

No kidding, about every three minutes my office door swings open and I hear, “Dad?” even before I can see who the voice belongs to. Usually it’s something important…like what are we having for dinner (like I should know), someone hit me (who cares), or can we do such and such a thing three years from now (yeah, I’ll check my calendar and get back with you).

I shoo them away with a lovingly-annoyed voice and three minutes later…Boom, “Dad?”

As a matter of fact a few minutes ago, I felt mad that they couldn’t leave me along for just a few minutes. I don’t ask for much and don’t insist on them staying away while I work, but can’t they take a HINT?!!

But then, there is nothing like hearing your name when your daughter takes a wooden-sword-shot to the head. She calls me because she knows I’ll be there…and she needs me.

They all do, really. They need their dad. And in some bizarre way that feels good. Yeah, I may not get much done or (here’s another interruption even as I write)…but the truth is, I wouldn’t trade it for a world of power lunches in power suits.

Afterall, I’m just ‘da dad…and that’s about as good as it gets.

I gotta go…they need me again.

You ‘da dad,

Todd

  1. Yeah, if I “work from home” that means I’m probably at Panera bread! I just have no good room of sanctuary with which to get much done from! The kitchen table works for awhile…but then it’s off to Panera when homeschooling is done!

  2. I appreciate the honesty! My husband’s company is closing the local office in 6 months, and he will be transitioning to full-time work at home. I’m feeling a little (okay, a lot) worried about how it will go, as he doesn’t graciously handle the constant noise and interruptions during the few hours at night and on weekends. I fear that all of us under 1 roof 24/7/365 may bring cause damage.

    1. Jennifer,
Be NOT afraid. It won’t cause damage. It will be hard at times…but better than you can imagine. It might take a little while so don’t throw in the towel before you get to the good stuff.
