Feeling Gloomy

Hey Dad,

The day is cold and gray up here in northern, IN, but that’s not why I’m feeling gloomy. Last week a fellow speaker and leader in the homeschool world announced his resignation and moral failure. It was a big blow to the homeschool community and surely brought a chuckle to the anti-Christian community.

I don’t know many (read: any) of the details. All I know is that a bunch of people are devastated. Oh, I could care less about his ruined reputation, loss of dignity, or the fact that he won’t be speaking for a long long time. All I can seem to think about are all the devastated relationships. The thought of his wife, children, and those of the non-disclosed party are almost overwhelming.

In a few weeks I’ll hardly think about ‘the failure’, the blogs will stop buzzing, and some other story will make the headlines…but his wife and children will never fully heal. They may recover and God is able to do amazing and wonderful things, but their life will never be the same.

That’s heavy.

I could comment on the situation and how we should respond as Christians…but I’ll let others do that. I just want to let this tragedy serve as a reminder to you and me, Dad of what matters. If you’ve found yourself sliding down that slippery path, tell someone before it’s too late. Run right now and let someone know who will help.

I don’t care about your reputation, your career, or what others will say…I care about your wife, children, and YOU.

You ‘da dad,

Todd

PS – Pray for this family and that the dad would take his punches…more punches…and that God would meet all their needs.

  1. Todd – I am not sure who you are referring to, but I will pray for this family. Satan is working overtime to bring down God’s people. God is the judge, not us. Most importantly, we need to fix our eyes on Jesus. Prayer, reading God’s word, and raising our kids to know Him in a personal way are the best ways to fight this battle. Keep fighting the good fight of faith! You are right Todd – get an accountability partner if you need someone to help you keep your eyes on Jesus.

  2. Not “the dad” here – wife instead… This is such a tragic reminder of what sin can do to ANY of us. Praying for the family and those involved…

  3. Thanks Todd, you are right. This serves as a reminder of the terrific wake of collateral damage that can come from following after the flesh. Keep your eyes and hands at home.

  4. I’m usually out of the loop on news and happenings and I just happened to hear about this a few minutes before your email came through. It was like being hit in the gut by a cannonball, and I cannot even imagine what it was like for this fellow’s family. I hope Christians will hold their criticism and even opinions on this and instead pray for him and his family.

  5. I concur with all. Satan is real and seeks to destroy marriage and family – God’s amazing design for our lives. We must set our eyes on Jesus, seeking fellowship that girds marriage and family. As you noted Todd, “I don’t care about your reputation, your career, or what others will say…” God already knows the story. Confess and be free, stand in the light of Christ out of the shadows. Don’t let satan fool you friends, he is a great deceiver and will seek to divide, separate and isolate us from the body of Christ. We are a new creation and we should not fear opening up ourselves, living a public life in Christ. Let our SELFISHNESS die – Jesus already bore that sin so we could be set free, don’t return to slavery! Rejoice in the Lord and seek Him out and He will fulfill his promises! Amen.

  6. When I was on staff at a church for a few years, they had a policy that no one on staff was allowed to be alone with someone of the opposite sex. It might be a little legalistic, but at the same time really prevents any chance of false accusations and prevents relationships developing with another woman. Even though I have left the church, I have still tried to hold to that policy personally. It is kind of funny because when I find my self accidentally in such a situation, I quickly feel uncomfortable and quickly exist from the scene. I too will be praying for his family and healing.
