Day 14 – Go with the Flow

Hey Dad,

I’m feeling a little bit of the Christmas panic as the Big day draws closer. We’ve been busy around here, the days are clicking by, and we’ve still got a stack of Family Christmas videos to get through.

My wife says, “So who cares if we can’t watch them all?”

My response, “I care!!!!! It’s tradition.” In fact, I can feel myself getting grumpy over the fact that we seem too busy to do some of the simple traditions we’ve ALWAYS done.

And then I remember Christmas is not about traditions…and either is family. Yes, traditions are fun, and I love having them. But the traditions are not what really matters. Truth is: if I’m not careful I can let ‘trying to keep the tradition” ruin what matters (just ask those Pharisees).

The thing is…family changes. The kids get older and busier, and we can’t get it all in like we used to. Now, I could kick and scream (like I’d like to do) and possibly ruin Christmas and the days leading up to it, OR I can enjoy my family when I have the opportunity, thankful for them and our limited time together.

Really, that’s one of the keys to Christmas and family: You gotta go with the flow. Enjoy the night and your family.

You ‘da Dad,

Todd

  1. I can so relate to this. I was sort of grieving over the fact that everyone is so busy that we can’t really gather every evening and read Advent stories like we used to…but I guess life changes and we do new things. Traditions don’t have to be forever. I know that, but it’s just a little hard. :-/
