Familyman Hometown Favorite Restaurants
Hey Dad,
Familyman Caleb Morris shared a favorite hometown restaurant in the Dallas/Fort Worth area—a 50’s-style diner called the Dairy-ette. Of course mine is California Dessert in Milford, IN and Culver’s (great frozen custard and kid’s meals)…and who can forget La Haciendas (great chips and atmosphere). Let’s make a list of YOUR favorite family hangout eateries. Don’t forget to tell us where they are.
Andy’s Igloo – Winter Haven, FL
A great cash-only place with cheap hotdogs, burgers, and lots of ice cream! A great place for my daddy-daughter dates.
Our family’s favorite family food joint is Joe’s Real BBQ. Great fun food and atmosphere and the picnic table seating and lawn are perfect for the kids (and Dad’s) to run around. If you are ever in Gilbert, AZ (just outside of Phoenix) check it out.
My family likes to go to Sweet Frog. They go there after co-op most weeks. Not really a local place but we don’t get to go out to eat often.
We have 2 Favorites. One is the local Chick Fil A that my two oldest sons work at. It’s not a local place, but the atmosphere there is VERY local. We love it there, and the food really is good. We also like Patricks. It’s a locally owned place with great wings, burgers and wraps. It’s a great place to go on Sundays becasue they have EVERY NFL game on!
The Fish Tale in New Prague, MN! Great food, family friendly atmosphere, and one of a kind. This just beats out Taco Bell for me 😉
We have a new favorite place we like to go to here in Omaha Ne. Its only a few blocks from our home ands its the Salween Thai Restaurant on Ames Ave. Prices are great and the little grocery store there is always fun to look through. Our kids have such a blast picking out treats from the store. Back to the restaurant, My wife and I usually order the Pad Thai and fried sushi rolls. Wow!!
I’m tickled that my family likes “Bunny’s Hasty Tasty Pancake House,” a great restaurant on Linden Avenue in Dayton, OH. My understanding is that the ‘Hasty Tasty’ used to be a chain; this one was named ‘Bunny’s’ so the locals knew which one you were talking about. Now it is the only one left. Benn there since the early 1950s. Although they just raised their price, if one goes between 0500-1000, you can get “two eggs, two bread (french toast, toast, or pancakes), and two meat (sausage or bacon for $3.99. Take the chance and to!
We’re in central Indiana, so haven’t found many good family (non-chain) restaurants around here. However, we frequently travel to New Mexico to visit my wife’s family and we have some must-visit places in Albuquerque. We never leave without going to all of these at least once. New Mexico has amazing green and red chile (order on the side if you are “heat-sensitive” so you can control the amount, but try it!) We are green chile fans. All these have multiple locations around Albuquerque and Rio Rancho (also one in Colorado Springs)
1. WECK’S. Breakfast and lunch (closes at 2). Great big pancakes for the kids (you’ll sneak a few bites because they are fluffy and delicious). Huge portions with enough for leftovers for pretty much everything. Wife, son and I all recommend the “Sloppy Papas” (pile of hash browns smothered with bacon, sausage gravy, cheese, eggs any style, and your choice of chile (which can be on the side) served with a tortilla). http://www.wecksinc.com/
2. DION’S PIZZA. (Now with a location in Colorado Springs, too). Just great pizza. Try it with green chile on it, if you dare, but even just the plain cheese pizza is great. You can buy by the slice, so everyone gets the topping they want. Family-size salads with their home-recipe ranch dressing (which is also wonderful for dipping the pizza). They have a great “viewing area” so the grown ups can chat and the kids can watch the pizzas being made. The subs are good too. http://www.dions.com/
3. LOS QUATES. We are huge fans of New Mexican food (which IS different from Mexican). We usually eat here multiple times. My wife loves Combinacion De Frank with green chile. I get Enchiladas Grandes, kids get tacos (chicken ones are great!), and they do have kids’ stuff like chicken fingers, but encourage them to try the good stuff. http://www.loscuatesrestaurants.com/loscuates/Los_Cuates.html
This one isn’t a chain (only one location), but we also like the Tomato Cafe. Fresh, healthy, delicious all you can eat Italian food buffet. Try the green beans; we think they’ll be on the menu in heaven. http://www.tomatocafe.com/
Andrew, NM is calling you from the land of nothing to eat. Come. Stay, You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave…
Antrim Truck Stop, Arnprior, Ontario
So this would be a 20 minute drive up the highway but a great place for a family to eat a great, reasonably priced, meal. Doesn’t hurt that there’s a gas station shop with nic-nacs that mg kids and wife enjoy and a small Chistian book/gift shop all attached, oh, and did I add the retail bakery selling that sweet treat or fresh bread/rolls for supper too!
Brooks’ House of Bar-B-Q in Oneonta, NY, is not just a 50’s-style restaurant, it has been there since 1951. Great chicken and ribs, as well as easy on the budget. If you are passing through south-central New York State on Route 88, it’s an easy stop, but you may need to be patient because it very popular and the wait can be out the door during prime times. Plus, they with cater a gathering for you, hours away. Food you can eat with your hands!
I love to take my kids to a frozen yogurt place called Menchies. Its a national chain, but they love it. Its a “daddiedaughterdate” regular
