Digging out!!

winter stormHey Dad,

Well, I have one car out of the driveway…but it may be a month before we see my wife’s little VW Bug. I think we got about 15″ of snow and the drifts are a lot deeper than that.

Yesterday afternoon we all went out and played in the snow and even built an igloo. Last night we battled the blizzard and walked uptown (just a few blocks) to go to the gas station…just for fun. And it was…one of those nights that my kids will remember forever.

Just a side note…why are we all of a sudden naming our winter storms? I mean Hugo and Katrina sound OK for a hurricane, but I’m not liking the name “Ion” or Hercules” as a winter storm name. Why does a snow storm have to have a name anyway? Does it make the snow seem more personal…or is it just because it sounds more sinister for news people.

Besides a snow storm would never have the name Ion or Hercules.

Here are some of the names of past winter storms:

Atlas, Boreas,Cleon, Dion, Falco, Vulcan, Rex, and Yona.

I mean what kind of names are those (besides my dad’s name being Rex)? I’m thinking if you’re going to name a winter snow storm you might as well name them something…snowish. So here’s my list of possible names for the next batch of blizzards:

Frosty, Sam, Olaf, Blitzen (you can even use all the reindeer for fun), Abominable, Chilly, Frost Bite, Icy, Marshmallow, and Fluffy. Don’t those sound more wintry?

Just a thought.

Got snow? Go enjoy it with your kids.

You ‘da dad,

Todd

  1. Yeah, amazing what living 2 hours-ish south of you can do. We got next to nothing…no memories the kids will remember forever because the 5-8 inches we were supposed to get turned into a dusting.

I definitely think if we name storms they should be nordic names. Olaf was a good one. Anders, Nils, Sven. Go into Viking or Norwegian mythology even!
