Real Dads Do Christmas

big dad christmas

Hey Dad,

Let me just state right up front that I’m a Christmas guy. I like the whole month, from Thanksgiving right on through until Christmas morning. I bleed red and green. While some have a problem with all the commercialism…I say, “Bring it on!!” I like twinkling lights, gaudy decorations, the rush of people at the mall, old TV Christmas specials, sentimental music, and the feeling that permeates the entire season. It’s one of the reasons my wife made me a red, plaid Christmas vest that I often wear to loudly proclaim, “I love Christmas.”

With that said, I know that a lot of dads don’t like Christmas. For whatever reason, they agree with the Grinch’s point of view and wouldn’t mind if the season could be truncated down to a few work-free days, filled with bowl games and cheese balls.

They don’t go as far as actually saying, “I hate Christmas,” but they pull out, dumping all the Christmas to-do-stuff on their wives.

“I’m busy…you and the kids can get the tree without me this time.”

“I’d like to go…but you’ll have to go to the Christmas musical without me.”

“Really, I’d love to be there…but you and the kids will have to go see the lights without me this year.”

Those dads don’t realize it, but they miss out on one of God’s greatest gifts to fathers – Christmas. I’m not lessening the gift of God’s Son to the world…but a bi-product of His birth is a whole month of open-window opportunities for family.

And it’s not a Martha Stewart-dominated holiday; it’s a guy’s kind of month. That’s why I loudly proclaim, “REAL DADS DO CHRISTMAS!!!”

I’m telling you, Dad, the days from Thanksgiving to New Year’s give us dads all kind of opportunities to be with our families, & to do things we’d never do unless there was a reason to celebrate. I believe the enchantment of that single event of God becoming man reverberates throughout time…and is the reason that magical feeling fills the air. While some bristle against the greeting “Happy Holidays,” I see it as an admission that these days are “Happy Holy-Days!”

So get your game face on, Dad, and get ready to do some Christmas.

You ‘da Dad,

Todd
