Tough Call

first snowHey Dad,

For the last…10-15 years our family has celebrated the First Snowfall. Not that we make it a huge deal…just some little winterish gifts like mittens, hats, or marshmellow candycanes. To top it off I write a little note to each of my children telling them how much I love them on the first snow. Did I mention we always eat at Long John Silvers on the first snow? Don’t know why exactly…except years ago we happened to be driving to LJS when it was snowing like crazy. Ever since it just felt like the thing to do. It’s what Tevye (from Fiddle on the Roof) would call TRADITION!

I love traditions…and I know my kids do too (my wife thinks we are ‘full’ and should get rid of a few of our traditions).

Anyway, it snowed last night…barely. Yes, there was a scant dusting this morning, but it’s all gone now. The thing is it just doesn’t feel like the Official First Snowfall. So…I had to make a call, “This was not it.”

Maggie (9) fussed, thinking she was going to get some big gift or get of school, but I stuck to my snow guns.

Now, I just have to get ready, because I know it’s coming soon and don’t want to be caught watching the snow melt.

So…if you’re looking for a good family fun tradition you just might celebrate the first snowfall…the first hurricane…the first earthquake. The important thing is not the occasion…but the celebration.

You ‘da dad,

Todd

PS – My dad says that weathermen consider it the first snowfall IF a cat can leave it’s track in it. We don’t even have a cat.

  1. We celebrate Valentine’s Day at IHOP – because years ago, when my kids were small, I had to work late on that day but I was able to break away for dinner and IHOP was the only place without a line out the door (go figure)! Every year. It’s just an inside joke with us now. Today I also woke up and declared Family Fun Day because we’ve been going crazy since early summer and couldn’t afford our usual summer getaway and we have all been feeling the stress. So I said, “Nope – not doing it today. Let’s go have some fun.” So we did. Lunch out, bowling (and we hit a kids special for Tuesday – score!) and milkshakes. Just a time to have fun as a family. It was awesome!

  2. We have “homeschool day” and My wife and I buy educations gifts when we go to a homeschool convention. Usually books they’d enjoy reading or perhaps another “Drive Through History”. We wrap them up and give them as gifts when we get home… It’s been a really fun tradition.
