Mount Rushmore, SD
Hey Dad,
I’ve got a few moments of quiet as everyone is out of the RV except Cal(5) and I. The girls are in Kohl’s and the boys are in Best Buy. It’s windy here in Rapid City, SD. As soon as everyone come back in we’re headed south and ready for some warmer weather.
After nearly abandoning our side trip to SD in light of the extra expense of the breakdown in Blue Earth, MN we decided to forge onward and darn the torpedoes kind of thing and do what we ‘set out to do.’
How glad we are. ON the way out we stopped at the Corn Palace at Mitchell (still trying to figure out why), Wall Drugs in Wall, SD (way cool), the Badlands National Park (awesome), Mount Rushmore (breath taking), and finally the Crazy Horse monument (makes me tired just thinking about all the work over 50 years).
It’s not always easy…but it is worth it.
The scenery is pretty…but there’s a lot of nothing out here. You have to plan your stops carefully. One the night in we parked along the highway at a rest stop. We’ve never done that before and although a little creepy when you’re the only one there it turned out to be a great alternative to Wal-Mart.
We’ve had a few tense moments…but God is doing something in this RV I like to call “The Crucible.” If you have a few seconds, pray that I would lead well.
Thanks.
Here are some photos…of stuff plus the Jolly Green Giant at Blue Earth, MN.
Until next time…Swing wide and keep your eye on your tail,
I am glad to hear you did not let the breakdown stop you from enjoying the Black Hills. When you get to the warmer weather, could you send some back to MN? May the Hand of the Father carry you on your journeys, may your path be straight and may “The Crucible” work as designed. Love ya Brother!
Had to share this…as I was looking at the last photo of the kids and thinking about what a great blessing a big family can be, I suddenly noticed that Mount Rushmore was in the backdrop, LOL. God’s greatest gift truely are those that reflect His image and not so much the works of our own hands…would still love to see Rushmore though!
GB,
Rob (Father of 6)
ps: my crew, as National Treasure movie fans, would be looking for “the lost city of gold”!
Will there be future book and talk on “The Crucible” ? It sounds tense but probably very rewarding as all trials are when they are over.
I echo the sentiments of the corn palace. I was also drug to the Mitchell “Doll Museum” as a kid. The only nice thing about that was the AC on the hot summer day!
Glad you were able to move on and enjoy the highlights of the state of South Dakota.
God be with you!
in your previous entry Todd you had something on breaking down and I commented about letting you know some tow truck info… here it is…
The American Towing Alliance… 800-618-6946, press 1 I’m told.
Luckily I’ve never had to call them because I’ve always been told who to call.
You know that if you break down and you’re in the road way- you do not Have To use who ever is on police rotation- you are entitled by law to use a tow co. of your choice IF you know of a reputable tow co.
Tow Co.‘s are like lawyers, they come in all forms and some are good and some are not. Some are not even trustworthy.
If you have the option to ride with the vehicle being towed, and are able to do so, that’s always a good choice.
Glad you got back on the road.
Todd, how about making a right at Atlanta and travel south about 6 hours?
We went to SD a few years ago and took the exact same picture at Mt. Rushmore and from the overlook at the Badlands.
How was the corn palace. We are headed back through Mitchel again this year, but not sure we will visit the corn palace this time.
