Greetings from Fort Worth, TX

Last time I wrote, Debbie had just thrown up and we were kind of waiting for the other shoe to be upchucked. It never came, and we were able to stroll the San Antonio Riverwalk in…San Antonio. Very cool, although not quite as romantic with eight kids tagging along. Must do if you find yourself in the area. Plus, it’s right across the street from the Alamo.

After San Antonio, we trucked down to Mustang Island State Park (right on the ocean) and were mighty disappointed by the prospect. Not only was there a big sign right after the welcome sign that read “Watch Out for Snakes,” but it also became apparent that in the big state of Texas everything is bigger…including the measurements of distance.

The “50 yards from the beach” was more like a half a mile walk to the beach. And the beach was covered, and I mean covered, in seaweed. So we quickly regrouped and made our way to Rockport, TX for a couple of nice days at the Rockport Beach and a really handy Wal-Mart parking lot.

We spent a couple days there and then a night at an RV resort (read RV parking lot) and then traveled back towards Dallas where we stopped in Austin to see the LBJ presidential museum (impressive and FREE), College Station to visit the George H. Bush presidential museum (very impressive but costs), Dublin to see the original Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant, and tomorrow we plan to tour the place where they print money (the name escapes me at the moment).

This all made me start thinking about vacation themes…you know, vacations built around a theme…like presidential museums, a person’s life, or civil war battles. I knew one great dad who traveled to all the great lakes to get water samples.

I’d love to hear some of your vacation theme ideas in the comments space below.

Sure seems like all that should be a lot of fun…and it is, but it’s amazing how much stress can occur in such fun places. Thursday we set up for the big Arlington Book Fair and then we head back to Lansing, MI.

Thanks to all of you who have prayed for us. The RV has run great and it really has gone very smoothly. I feel very blessed and grateful to God for all that we have seen and experienced. I have a great wife and great family…if only I would treat them that way.

Time to turn in.

Here are some photos… click here to view more photos.

Until next time…turn wide and keep your eye on your tail,

  1. Hey Todd,
Glad to hear that you made it to Arlington. I am planning to be there with my wife and kids Friday. Do you have any of the new T-shirts with you? Looking forward to meeting you.

  2. The last few yrs, we’ve tried to apply at least one Christian-themed adventure on each vacation. When we went to Disney in Florida, we also went to the Holy Land Experience (also in Orlando). When we went to Sevierville, TN we also went to the Miracle Theater. Next fall vacation, we decided to plan a whole vacation around this wonderful theme of supporting Christians. We are headed to the Creation Museum in Kentucky and then through Amish country to Pennsylvania to Sight and Sound! Always a wonderful way to keep our mind on Christ and to show the kids you can still have fun while being a Christian and supporting other Christians!

  3. hey Todd, Those boys are getting big. Looks like your in safe company with your body guard troop in tow.
