Refined by Fire: A Family’s Triumph of Love and Faith
I opened the box yesterday expecting the usual supply of devotional books for the teens in my youth group. I had forgotten I ordered some other reading material for them. One of the books I ordered was this book written by the Birdwells. It is an amazing story. While just over 200 pages, I read it in less than 24 hours. It is a gripping tale of struggle, survival and triumph over adversity.
On September 11, 2001, LTC Birdwell was two car lengths from the impact area of the 757 aircraft that slammed into the Pentagon. 2000 degree heat, flames and the concussion from the explosion all had an effect on the colonel. Burned with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body, he thought he was going to die. The story of his survival will keep you riveted to every page in this book.
The story doesn’t end with the events that happened on 9-11. Brian’s incredible “against-all-odds” comeback, with the support of his wife Mel, is an encouragement to anyone facing any kind of difficulty. Their honest revelation of a “normal” faith being tested with “abnormal” circumstances demonstrates how the grace of God can work in an individual’s life. Together they faced challenges beyond description – with God’s direction they have triumphed.
Upon the colonel’s retirement from the U.S. Army, they started a ministry to reach out to other burn victims called Face the Fire Ministries. They have a website that is worth checking out: www.facethefire.org.
This book is a must read. It reminded me of the tragic events surrounding 9-11, yet inspired me with the realization that God was working through everything that took place that day. There is also a section in the back with scriptures to use to comfort others in time of need. A great resource – easy to read – and worth every penny!
I enjoyed this book, also. Brian’s description of the initial blast and escape from the building were every raw and transparent. I would recommend this book to any man.
Note that Brian is now a state senator in Texas for district 22. His campaign website is brianbirdwell.net. He will be seeking his second full term in the fall.
