Kids Love I-75 by George & Michele Zavatsky

Fellow familyman George Zavatsky and his wife Michele (with some help from their kids) authored *Kids Love I-75*. I asked George to tell us about their book and give us an insider’s view on the best of the road.

KIDS LOVE I-75 is about sidetrips: Travel just minutes off the interstate to explore lands of mighty bridges and misty swamps. Meet cowboys and Indians, authors & inventors. Discover fun factory tours or ride the rails past parks & pioneers. Hunt through caves and romp around playful forts. Or, hang out with sly sharks or towering dinos!

The best can be found in each state:

Michigan: remote Mackinac Island & the Big Mac Bridge. The best place to get the “insiders” info on the history and the area is above Mama Mia’s pizza shop at the Mackinac Bridge Museum. Note: The former museum was destroyed by a fire but we confirmed by a phone call on 8/11/2009 that it has reopened.

Ohio: Astronauts and Aircraft – Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing in Neil Armstrong’s hometown museum – Armstrong Air & Space Museum

Kentucky: Cars and caves are awesome but the Free Toyota Factory Tour was amazing and a great way to see all the sciences in ACTION. Also, Ken Hamm’s Creation Museum is only 10 minutes off Exit 185. A $30 million biblical look at
the beginnings of time. Don’t miss the planetarium! A must see!

Tennessee: Famous Mountains – See Rock City – we’ve all seen the barns and billboards – but this attaction is a great several hour stop. See 7 states (so they claim). The Chattanooga Mountain Inclined Railway is a fun way venture up a mountain for sure!

Georgia: Peaches & Pecans (ice cream, too) – Get it all at Lane Southern Orchards – a great factory tour, fun photo ops for the kids and some of the freshest peaches anywhere. See peaches “march in like soldiers from the field” on giant conveyor belts.

Florida: So much to see and do here of course, but one standout for uniqueness was Wannado City where a kid can live, work, play in an imaginary city for a day. Very cool…

As you can imagine our Kids Love I-75 has over 400 kid-tested places from Michigan to Florida (all within 10 miles of I-75). It was hard to pick as hundreds of places are favorites for sure. Be spontaneous, make planned sidetrips, or get to know your favorite destination better! 1800 miles of entertaining maps, trivia and attractions. You won’t believe what quick adventures you’ll find.

  1. I hope you can lend some further thought. My wife and I had hoped to finally (after more than 10 years) take a real family vacation to Florida, but the money just is not there without credit cards. I work for the State of Indiana, which pays poorly, and my wife stays and home and conducts school for our four kids. I think we are happy, but all have wanted to take a real vacation, like we hear persons like you doing. So, what do you think? Take the vacation on credit, as we can never save up for it, or just drop the idea? Please let me know at doarnold@isdh.in.gov. Thanks.

  2. We’ve never financed vacations, but budgeted for them. We knew time was ticking and that some memories not made would be lost. A few hundred dollars can yield a lot of fun on the road, if you know how to use it. Many times our favorite things are free or little money for admission. Probably at least 50 things in the I-75 book alone! Make it a family project, get extra work, get the kids involved – start a vacation jar…and most importantly pray for guidance!

We’re going to our FIRST NFL game (and I’m 46) tonight…Steelers/Cardinals and we’re eating in the parking lot before we go into the game and the land of “Stadium Prices” for everything. We’ve budgeted $20 for food/drink at the game. The kids know this and appreciate that we share it with them. It’s fun to watch them figure out how to spend it…
